01 / WHO WE ARE

A future for
the wild.

The desert is more than the space between cities. It is a place worth understanding—and protecting.

Save Our Mojave is dedicated to raising awareness of California’s Mojave Desert and the wildlife that calls it home. We believe informed people can make a difference for this extraordinary landscape.

Our purpose is simple: bring research into the conversation, make knowledge accessible, and inspire care for the Mojave.

02 / KNOW THE LAND

Far from empty.

Look closer. Beyond the open horizon is a remarkable world of life, adaptation, and change.

Desert tortoise in its natural habitat WILDLIFE

Life at desert pace.

Desert tortoises spend about 95% of their lives in burrows. These shelters help them endure heat and drought, but habitat loss, disease, and climate change threaten their survival across the Mojave.

A CLOSER LOOK

At Kelso Dunes, shifting sand can produce a deep, resonant “booming” sound. Even a landscape that looks still has a story to tell.

01

Give wildlife space.

Watch tortoises from a distance. Avoid touching or disturbing them; stress can cause them to lose precious stored water.

02

Stay on established roads.

Vehicles can crush hidden burrows. Watch for tortoises crossing roads, and check beneath your parked car before leaving.

03

Carry your care with you.

Pack out your trash, including food waste. Learn about the places you visit and help others appreciate the desert’s living landscape.

LET’S KEEP THE MOJAVE IN THE CONVERSATION

For the desert.
For the future.
